freeehouse Test phase

Wix or Squarespace?

Squarespace has the stricter, often more elegant templates, Wix the greater design freedom and more extensions. At entry level, according to the price pages, both cost around €13 to €14 a month with annual payment, and with both, the site can't be taken with you in full.

Who is Squarespace better for?

For creatives who want a calm, high-quality look and don't need to move every element themselves. The templates are built so that they are hard to spoil. Shop and appointment booking are well integrated.

Who is Wix better for?

For anyone who wants to design every detail themselves and needs many extra functions through apps. That freedom has a price: pages get restless more easily, and a lot of code can weigh on loading time.

What speaks against both?

Both are subscriptions with no ownership of the site. According to the help pages, export is not possible with Wix and only partial with Squarespace. Email costs extra with both in the long run. If you need multiple languages, you often pay for extensions.

What matters for photographers?

Large, sharp images that still load fast, and a design that steps back. Both builders can do that if images are uploaded at a sensible size. More important than the provider is restraint with effects. More on the industry under Website for photographers.

Our recommendation

  • Elegant template, little tinkering, shop included: Squarespace.
  • Full design freedom, lots of apps: Wix.
  • Your own design without a builder and without upkeep: a built website.

freeehouse builds websites for creatives that are calm and image-led, in the look of your current site if you like. We don't charge for the build, you only pay for hosting, cheaper than today. Claim your spot on the waiting list

What does a shop cost with each?

According to the price pages, for online payments with Wix you need at least the Core plan at €25 a month plus tax. With Squarespace a simple shop already works on the Basic plan, with a 2% fee on sales, and without that fee from Core at €20.23 a month with annual payment. On top of that, both charge the payment service's fees. For a small shop with few products, Squarespace Core is often cheaper.

What is involved in switching between the two?

Switching from Wix to Squarespace or the other way round is always a rebuild. Plan it so that the new site is finished before the old subscription renews, back up original images and text, and redirect all old addresses.

Frequently asked questions
