Why do businesses look for a Squarespace alternative?
The most common reasons in our conversations: billing in dollars or with unclear tax, extra costs for multiple languages, a second system for shop or booking, and the dependence, because according to Squarespace's help pages the site can only be exported in part.
What alternatives are there?
| Alternative | Price according to provider | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Wix | from €14 per month, annual, plus tax | anyone who wants to keep designing freely |
| Jimdo | from €12 per month over 12 months, incl. VAT | simple sites, German provider |
| IONOS website builder | Plus €18 per month after 12 months | Website, domain, mailbox from one provider |
| STRATO website builder | Plus €12 per month after 12 months | low long-term price |
| WordPress | Free software, hosting extra | full control |
| Website built for you | depends on provider | little work on your side, custom design |
Prices taken from the providers' pages on 22 and 23 October 2026.
What matters for photographers and creatives?
For photographers, illustrators and artists, the website is the portfolio. In our projects we have learned that the calmer the site, the better the images look. No gimmicks, images unaltered and large, a clear gallery, fast loading despite big files. Photographers have told us that as soon as the design is louder than the images, the site feels restless. So for creatives our rule is: images in the centre, design in the background.
Wix or Squarespace?
If you want to keep designing yourself, Wix is the obvious alternative with similar freedom. Neither can be exported, or only in part. A comparison is at Wix or Squarespace.
And a website of your own?
With a website of your own, whether WordPress or hand-built, the site belongs to you, and multiple languages or booking can be built in directly instead of through an extra subscription. You do need someone to build and look after it, or the time and know-how to do it yourself.
freeehouse rebuilds your Squarespace site, with the same calm look if you like, and charges nothing for the build. We build multiple languages and booking into the site. You only pay for hosting, cheaper than today. How freeehouse works
When is the right time to switch?
Shortly before your website subscription renews. According to Squarespace, annual plans are only refunded within the first 14 days after the first payment, after that the subscription runs to its end. Plan the switch so that the new site is ready before the renewal date.
What do I take with me from Squarespace?
- Texts, ideally copied page by page
- Original images from your own folders, because according to Squarespace the export does not include them in one go
- Blog posts via the WordPress export
- Orders and customer data
- the list of all page addresses
Frequently asked questions
What is a European alternative to Squarespace?
For example Jimdo from Hamburg or the website builders from IONOS and STRATO. A website of your own can run with any European host.
What is the cheapest alternative to Squarespace?
During promotional periods, STRATO Plus at €12 per month incl. VAT is one of the cheapest builders. Always work out the price after the promotion, though.
Can I move my Squarespace site to WordPress?
In part. Squarespace exports selected content as a WordPress file. Design, many page types and images have to be set up again.
Which alternative is good for photographers?
One where images are large, sharp and quick to load, and the design stays in the background. That can be a builder with a good template or a hand-built website.
