Cancelling a website builder: process and notice periods at Wix, Jimdo, IONOS and STRATO

You cancel Wix, Jimdo, IONOS and STRATO online in your customer account, and the cancellation usually takes effect at the end of the paid term. At Jimdo and STRATO it must, according to the provider, normally arrive one month in advance, and the domain and mailboxes deserve special attention before you click.

Before you cancel

The order matters. First the new website finished and online, then cancel. Otherwise you are left without a site or lose your domain and email.

  • Back up content: texts, images, form submissions, invoices.
  • Check whether domain and mailboxes are part of the contract.
  • Note the renewal date and deadline.
  • New website online and domain switched.
  • Then cancel, and only the services you no longer need.

Wix

You cancel a premium plan in your Wix account under Premium Subscriptions via the menu next to the plan. According to Wix, the plan stays active until the end of the billing period and does not renew afterwards.

A domain bought through Wix is not cancelled with it, according to Wix. You switch off its automatic renewal separately. Anyone who cancels within 14 days of the first purchase gets a full refund according to Wix. A Wix website cannot be exported according to the Wix help pages, so back up the content yourself beforehand.

Jimdo

According to the Jimdo help pages, you cancel your plan in the account under Subscription. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the current contract term and normally has to arrive at least one month before the renewal date. Without cancellation, the plan renews.

Extra products such as domains are cancelled separately, according to Jimdo. After cancellation the website continues as a free plan. When a domain is moved, neither content nor email accounts move with it, according to the Jimdo help pages. For contracts with a German billing address, the Jimdo terms give different rules depending on the date of signing, so check your end date in the account.

IONOS

According to the IONOS help pages, you cancel in your account under My Account, Contracts & Subscriptions. There you choose the contract, select Cancel contract on the Details tab and confirm at the end with Cancel contract now. You can also do it by phone. The confirmation arrives by email.

You can cancel the whole contract or individual services. IONOS advises downloading invoices beforehand, backing up data and listing all mailboxes and forwardings. According to IONOS, an active Domain Guard has to be switched off before cancelling. The deadlines depend on the minimum term and the contract, and IONOS points to a separate help article for that.

STRATO

According to STRATO, you cancel online in the customer login under Your contract, Cancellation and refund. You can also do it by phone with a service PIN, through the contact form or in writing.

According to STRATO, the notice period is one month to the end of the term. A later cancellation only takes effect after another full term. Anyone who cancels a whole plan also cancels all included extra products and domains, according to STRATO. A cancellation can be withdrawn in the login up to 30 days before the cancellation date.

Typical mistakes

These mistakes happen most often when switching.

  • Cancelled the whole plan although the mailboxes ran inside it.
  • Missed the deadline and paid for another term.
  • Did not back up content before the site went offline.
  • At Wix, cancelled only the plan and let the domain keep running although it is no longer needed.
  • Did not read the cancellation confirmation.

Avoid paying twice

Because website builders usually bill in advance, your plan often keeps running for months after you cancel. That is why freeehouse only issues the first invoice when your old contract ends, at the latest five months after you say yes.

If you want to know before cancelling what you would pay after the switch, you can request a free draft with a price from freeehouse.

If you want your current website rebuilt without paying for the build: freeehouse builds it by hand, and you only pay for hosting with care, cheaper than today. Claim your spot on the waiting list

Frequently asked questions

Is my website deleted immediately when I cancel?

Usually not. At Wix and Jimdo, the plan runs until the end of the paid period according to the provider, then the site stays as a free version with provider advertising or a provider address.

Can I withdraw a cancellation at STRATO?

Yes, according to STRATO up to 30 days before the cancellation date in the login.

Do I lose my domain at STRATO if I cancel the plan?

According to STRATO, all included domains are cancelled with the plan. So plan the domain move beforehand.

Do I get money back at Wix?

According to Wix, only if you cancel within 14 days of the first purchase, then the full amount. The plan then ends immediately.

When should I cancel?

When the new website is online and the domain is switched, but before the deadline passes. At Jimdo and STRATO that means one month before the end of the term at the latest.
