Squarespace: pros and cons

Squarespace impresses with highly designed templates, shop and booking from one provider and a tidy interface. For businesses in Germany, against that stand unclear tax details, separate subscriptions for domain and email, shop fees in the small plan and only a partial export.

What speaks for Squarespace?

  • Design. The templates are among the most appealing of the website builders. A real argument for creatives.
  • Everything from one provider. Website, shop, appointment booking and newsletter can all live in the same system.
  • Tidy interface. Less freedom than with Wix, but harder to spoil the site.
  • No hosting to think about. Squarespace takes care of technology, certificate and updates.

What speaks against it?

  • Tax and currency. The pricing page contradicts itself on VAT, and some businesses are billed in dollars.
  • Many separate subscriptions. According to Squarespace, website, domain, email campaigns and Google Workspace are separate subscriptions.
  • Fees. According to the pricing page, 2% on shop sales in the Basic plan.
  • Only partial export. According to Squarespace's help pages, selected content as a WordPress file, images not in one go.
  • Extra costs for multiple languages through extensions, as businesses have told us.
  • Your own work on the site and its content.

Is Squarespace good for Google?

Squarespace offers page titles, descriptions, a sitemap and clean addresses. Images uploaded too large can slow a page down on mobile. For businesses with a local audience, the Google Business Profile often matters more than the choice of builder. More at Create a Google Business Profile.

Who is Squarespace right for?

For creatives, studios and small shops that care about looks, want to design themselves and have no problem with a US provider. For businesses that mainly want things simple, cheap and billed in euros, there are better fits.

What do we hear from Squarespace customers?

Of the first 35 customers at freeehouse in October 2026, 4 came from Squarespace. Typical themes beforehand: billing in dollars plus tax, a second system for the shop and extra costs for translations. Creatives expressly wanted their images to stay unaltered and large.

If you like the look of Squarespace but not the subscriptions: freeehouse rebuilds your site in a calm design, with no build cost, and multiple languages are part of the site. You only pay for hosting, cheaper than today. Claim your spot on the waiting list

Checklist: stay with Squarespace or switch?

  1. 1

Are you happy with the billing and the tax details on your invoice?

  2. 2

Do you manage without extensions that cost extra?

  3. 3

Is the range of features enough for your shop and booking?

  4. 4

Do you have time to look after the site yourself?

  5. 5

Are you fine with not being able to take the whole site with you?

If you answer yes to everything, there is little reason to switch. Squarespace is a good builder for anyone who cares about design.

What should I improve on Squarespace if I stay?

  • Resize images to the displayed size before uploading.
  • Create a separate page with a clear title for each service.
  • Check whether embedded services such as maps or videos load without consent.
  • Link the Google Business Profile to the website.
