Cancel Jimdo, keep your domain and email

You keep your domain and email when you leave Jimdo if you first clarify where the mailboxes will run in future, then change only the record for the website, and move or cancel the domain at the very end. According to the Jimdo help pages, email accounts do not move automatically with a domain transfer.

Why is email the critical point with Jimdo?

With many Jimdo contracts, domain and mailbox are in the same plan. According to the Jimdo help pages, neither the website content nor the email accounts are transferred when the domain moves to another provider. So if you simply cancel or move, in the worst case you end up with a domain without a working mailbox.

With current plans such as Start and Grow, no mailbox is included according to the pricing page, and addresses are connected and forwarded there. So check your own contract first.

Step 1: Where does your email live today?

You find out by looking at the invoice you pay for the mailbox, or by checking your domain's MX records. Three cases are typical:

  • The mailbox is part of your Jimdo plan.
  • Your address is only a forward to another mailbox, for example at Gmail or Web.de.
  • Your mailbox is with a provider of its own, for example Microsoft 365.

In the second and third case the switch is easy, because your email does not depend on Jimdo at all as long as the records are right.

Step 2: Secure or move the mailbox

If the mailbox is with Jimdo and should not stay there, you first set up a new mailbox with another provider. Then you copy the old emails, for example through your email program. Only after that are the MX records pointed to the new provider. That way there is no day without mail.

If the mailbox is to stay with Jimdo, nothing changes in this step. Later you only have to make sure you do not cancel the mailbox together with the website.

Step 3: Switch only the website

For the new website only the record that decides where the website address points is changed, usually the A record for the main address and the record for www. The MX records and other records for email stay unchanged. In our moves, one customer had trouble finding the right place in the Jimdo menu. Instructions with pictures help more here than any explanation over the phone.

Step 4: Leave the domain or move it

The domain can stay with Jimdo as long as you keep paying for it there. If you want to leave completely, you move it with the transfer code, called AuthInfo for .de domains. According to DENIC it is valid for 30 days. Beforehand you note down all DNS records and recreate them exactly with the new provider. How that works is explained under Moving a domain with AuthInfo.

Step 5: Cancel last

Only when website and email have run stably for a few days do you cancel at Jimdo. According to the Jimdo help pages, generally at the latest one month before renewal, with add-on products individually. More under Cancel Jimdo.

What if the email is already gone?

If the domain has already been cancelled and emails no longer arrive, contact your previous provider immediately. As long as a .de domain has not been deleted yet, it can usually still be rescued. The faster the better. Emails sent in the meantime are often lost, though.

At freeehouse, domain and email stay exactly where they are today. We only change the record for the website, send you instructions for it and then check that emails keep arriving. We do not charge for building the new site. Moving from Jimdo

Example: what the switch looks like

A simplified example for a domain whose email is with a provider of its own. The values are placeholders.

What matters is the right-hand column below: everything to do with email stays as it is.

Frequently asked questions

If your mailbox is in the Jimdo plan and you cancel it too, yes. So first set up a new mailbox, copy the old emails, change the MX records and only then cancel.

Can I keep my Jimdo domain and still switch?

Yes. The domain can stay with Jimdo and point to the new website, or you move it to another provider with the AuthInfo code.

Does my website move along if I move the domain?

No. According to the Jimdo help pages, the content is not transferred with the domain. The new website is built with the new provider.

How long does the switch take?

The record itself is changed in a few minutes. It can take a few hours until all devices know the new address.
