How do I cancel my Squarespace subscription?

According to Squarespace's help pages:

  1. 1

Log in to Squarespace and open the site in question.

  2. 2

    Go to the Billing area.

  3. 3

Open Subscriptions and the website subscription.

  4. 4

    Click Cancel subscription and confirm.

The interface is available in German, some help articles only in English. The terms can differ slightly depending on the language.

Do I get money back?

According to Squarespace's help pages, Squarespace fully refunds annual plans that are cancelled within 14 days of the first payment. With monthly payment the site stays active until the end of the billing period, and there is no refund. Renewals generally have no refund either.

What keeps running after cancellation?

According to Squarespace, website, domains, email campaigns and Google Workspace are independent subscriptions. Cancelling the website subscription does not cancel the others. That is good for your email, which simply keeps running. But it also means that if you want nothing more to do with Squarespace, you have to end each subscription individually.

What do I need to back up first?

According to Squarespace's help pages, only selected content can be exported as a WordPress file. Images cannot be downloaded in one go, and with several blogs only one is exported. So back up the following first:

  • Texts of all pages you want to keep
  • Your original images, ideally from your own folders rather than from the site
  • Form entries, customer data and orders
  • A list of all your subpage addresses, so they can be redirected on the new site

What order do I do things in?

  1. 1

Build the new website, Squarespace stays online.

  2. 2

Check the domain: is it with Squarespace or elsewhere?

  3. 3

Point the domain's website record to the new site, do not touch the email records.

  4. 4

    Check that everything works.

  5. 5

    Cancel the website subscription.

  6. 6

Only cancel or move the domain and Workspace once they are safely taken care of.

At freeehouse, the first invoice only comes when your Squarespace subscription ends, at the latest 5 months after you say yes. Your email via Google Workspace can stay as it is. Move from Squarespace

Checklist before cancelling Squarespace

  • Which subscriptions are running: website, domain, Google Workspace, email campaigns, appointment booking?
  • Is the domain with Squarespace or with another provider?
  • New website ready and domain switched?
  • Original images and texts backed up?
  • Orders, customer data and form entries exported?
  • List of all page addresses for the redirects created?

What happens to my domain at Squarespace?

If the domain is registered with Squarespace, it keeps running as a separate subscription. You can leave it there and point it to the new website, or move it to another provider with the transfer code. If it is registered elsewhere and only connected to Squarespace, you change the records at your domain provider. In both cases the email records stay unchanged.

What about appointment bookings through Squarespace?

If you use Squarespace's booking product, it is a separate subscription. It can keep running and be embedded in the new website, or you switch to another booking system. The important thing is to back up existing appointments first.
