freeehouse Test phase

Cancel Wix and keep your domain

You can keep your domain when you leave Wix: either it stays at Wix and points to the new website via a DNS record, or you move it to another provider with a transfer code. What matters is not to change the records for your email along the way.

Where is my domain actually registered?

Before you change anything, clarify two things. First, where the domain is registered. If you bought it through Wix, it is with Wix. If you bought it elsewhere earlier and only connected it to Wix, it is with that provider, for example IONOS, STRATO or another domain provider.

Second, where your email runs. Is there Google Workspace via Wix, Microsoft 365 or a mailbox with your domain provider behind your address? You can see this in your domain's MX records or on the invoice you pay for the mailbox.

Route 1: the domain stays at Wix

This is the simplest route. The domain stays registered where it is, and you only change the records that decide where your website address points. For connected domains, Wix distinguishes between connecting via nameservers and via individual records. For the switch you need the DNS records management in your Wix account.

As a rule only two records change: the A record for the main address and the record for www. The MX records for email and other records such as SPF stay unchanged. That way email keeps running without interruption.

The catch: the domain keeps costing its yearly price at Wix. You can cancel the website plan, but then you have to keep renewing the domain actively.

Route 2: the domain moves to another provider

If you want nothing left at Wix, you move the domain. For .de domains this works with a transfer code, the AuthInfo. You get it from your current provider, which is Wix. According to DENIC, such a code is valid for 30 days, the new provider submits it, and the domain changes hands.

Before the move you note down all DNS records, especially those for email. At the new provider you recreate them exactly. Otherwise no emails arrive after the move. How the transfer works is explained in the guide Moving a domain with AuthInfo.

What happens to my email?

If your mailbox runs through Google Workspace at Wix, that is a separate subscription. It keeps running as long as you pay for it, even if you cancel the website plan. If you want to keep it, nothing changes. If you want to switch, you set up the new mailbox, copy the old emails and only then change the MX records.

If your email runs elsewhere, the website switch does not affect it at all, as long as nobody touches the MX records.

Which mistakes happen most often?

In our go-lives in October 2026 the DNS step almost always slowed things down. These are the mistakes we came across:

  • A name was typed into a field that has to stay empty. The result: an address like domain.de.domain.de, which leads nowhere.
  • Old A records stayed next to the new one. Visitors then land on the old site one time and on the new one the next.
  • The security certificate did not appear by itself and had to be triggered again.
  • On switch day customers still saw the old site because their device had cached the old address.

All of these mistakes can be fixed. The main thing is that the email records stay untouched.

At freeehouse, domain and email stay with your current provider, even if that is Wix. We only change the record for the website and send you instructions with pictures. We do not charge for building the new site. Moving from Wix

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my domain if I cancel Wix?

No. According to Wix, the domain is not cancelled with the plan. It keeps running until you switch off its renewal. Only let it expire if you have moved it beforehand or really no longer need it.

Can I connect a Wix domain to another website?

Yes. In the DNS management at Wix you change the records for the website, usually the A record and www. The records for email stay the same.

How do I get the transfer code for my domain?

For .de domains it is called AuthInfo. You request it from your current provider, at Wix in the Domains section. According to DENIC it is valid for 30 days.

Does my email work during the switch?

Yes, as long as the MX records are not changed. The website switch only affects the record for the website address.
