What speaks for Wix?
- Quick start. You pick a template, change texts and images and are online over a weekend.
- No tech. Wix takes care of hosting, security certificate and updates.
- Many features via apps. Bookings, shop, forms, blog. A lot can be added without programming.
- Creative freedom. Elements can be moved freely on the page. Anyone who likes designing themselves values that.
- One contact for everything. Website, domain and, if you want, email all run through one account.
What speaks against Wix?
- The site belongs to the system. According to the Wix help pages, a Wix site cannot be exported and run elsewhere. Switching means a rebuild.
- Ongoing costs. From €14 per month paid yearly plus tax according to the pricing page, plus domain from the second year, mailboxes and apps.
- Your time. You do the texts, images, structure and upkeep yourself.
- Heavy code. In analyses we did for businesses in October 2026, a typical Wix homepage loaded around one megabyte of code with 50 to 65 scripts. That makes pages slower on mobile.
- Template look. Many sites in one city and industry look alike because they are based on the same templates.
Is Wix good for Google?
Wix offers the basics Google needs: own page titles, descriptions, redirects, an automatic sitemap and a connection to Search Console. The limits are loading time and control over the code. For content that other bots should read too, Google recommends pages whose content is in the HTML without JavaScript. Not every crawler, for instance those of chat search, runs JavaScript. More on this in the guide Showing up in ChatGPT and Google answers.
Who is Wix the right choice for?
Wix fits if you enjoy designing yourself, regularly have time for the site and do not mind staying with the provider permanently. For a hobby site, a club page or a portfolio, Wix is a solid solution.
Wix fits less well if you lack time, the site is an important channel for enquiries and you want to stay independent.
What do businesses that left Wix say?
Of the first 35 businesses that said yes to freeehouse in October 2026, 8 came from Wix. The most common worries before switching were whether they could still change texts and images themselves and what would happen to domain and email. Both can be solved: through an admin area of their own, and by changing only the record for the website.
One prospect told us about a move within Wix where he had no access for days and photos were cropped. Since then we have had a rule: the old site stays complete until every new site has been checked.
If cost and work are what bother you about Wix: freeehouse builds you a website of your own, that belongs to you. You pay nothing for the build, and afterwards only for hosting with care, cheaper than today. Claim your spot on the waiting list
Checklist: stay with Wix or switch?
Answer the questions honestly with yes or no. The more yeses, the more a switch is worth it.
- 1
Do you spend more than an hour a month on the website, although you would rather do something else?
- 2
Is your Wix bill, with domain, mailbox and apps, higher than €200 a year?
- 3
Do customers ask about things that should actually be on the website, such as prices or process?
- 4
Does your homepage load noticeably slowly on your phone over mobile data?
- 5
Do you have services that so far have no page of their own?
- 6
Would it be a problem for you if Wix changed its prices or terms and you could not simply move?
If you answer no to most questions, Wix is probably the right solution for you. Then it makes more sense to improve your existing site, for example with clearer texts and one page per service.
What should I improve at Wix if I stay?
- A page of its own for every important service, with a title made of service and place.
- Shrink images before uploading them, it saves loading time.
- Remove unused apps, they often cost money and speed.
- Connect Search Console and look in once a month.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and link it to your website.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix reputable?
Yes. Wix is a listed company and one of the best-known website builders. The downsides are not about reputation but about the model: you rent the site.
Is Wix suitable for companies?
For small businesses with time and a taste for designing, yes. If you have little time or get many enquiries through the website, check loading speed, costs and dependency carefully.
Can I switch later at Wix?
Yes, but only with a rebuild. You can reuse content such as texts and images, but the site itself cannot be exported according to the Wix help pages.
Can Wix be used in line with GDPR?
Wix offers settings for cookies and privacy. Whether your site complies with the rules depends on which apps and services you embed. You always need a privacy policy of your own.
Is Wix getting more expensive?
Prices can change. One business calculated for us that its builder had become roughly half as expensive again in four years. You can see the current price on the pricing page and in your account.
